Floor heating on Wire mesh mats

Installing floor heating on a shrink net / wire mesh mat? This mounting method is often used in new construction of homes. The floor heating pipe is secured to a 3mm wire steel net using a special braiding machine, which is also supplied and installed by Braakman.

Adhesive screed:
Installation method* Wire mesh mats
Minimum Installation Height** 50mm
Tube diameter*** 16mm

Floating screed:
Installation method* Wire mesh mats
Minimum Installation Height** 70mm
Tube diameter*** 16mm

* With an adhesive screed, the tubes are attached to shrink nets without additional insulation or foil. Because no foil is used, the new screed floor adheres to the (existing) construction floor. This is usually done when there is little height available.

** The minimum installation height applies to the height of the system, including screed floor. The height (thickness) of the floor finish must be added to this.

*** When installing in a new screed floor, other tube diameters are also possible, but 16mm is often assumed, because a center distance of 10cm is easier to achieve.

Cheap and effective

Operation of floor heating system on wire mesh mats

With an floor heating system with wire steel, or shrink nets, a heating net is installed on the construction floor or a foam concrete floor, i.e. before the finishing floor is laid. Heated water flows through the floor heating pipes, which are then incorporated into the floor. The heat is released to the floor and then spreads to the space above. This type of floor heating is one of the most cost-effective methods of installing floor heating on rough subfloors.

Shrink nets for floor heating are made of steel and covered with a protective zinc layer. This makes them galvanized nets, which are resistant to rust, corrosion and oxidation. This gives them a long lifespan, which is very beneficial for floor heating systems.

Advantages and disadvantages of floor heating on wire mesh nets

Advantages of floor heating on wire mesh nets

Here are several advantages of installing floor heating on wire mesh nets:

  1. Flexibility in insulation: You have the freedom to decide how you want to insulate the floor. If you have a crawl space, you can add insulation to the underside of the floor, which will help keep the new screed as thin as possible.

  2. Quick installation: The installation of floor heating on wire mesh nets can be carried out quickly.

  3. Suitable for various floor coverings: You can apply almost any type of floor covering to wire mesh nets.

  4. Efficiency: The system can be implemented quickly and the floor can be finished immediately after installation.

  5. Fast heating of the room: Due to the direct location of the heating pipes under the floor surface, the room is heated quickly and evenly.

  6. Cost-effective: Using wire mesh nets is one of the most economical ways to install floor heating.

These advantages make floor heating on wire mesh nets an attractive choice for both new construction and renovation projects, where efficiency and flexibility are important.

Disadvantages of underfloor heating on wire mesh nets

Here are some disadvantages of wire mesh nets floor heating:

  1. Construction height: Floor heating on shrink nets requires a certain installation height, mainly because of the space required for insulation, the wire mesh nets themselves, and the final screed floor. This may result in a raised floor level, which may not be desirable in existing situations or during renovations.

  2. Need for a screed: After placing the wire mesh nets and pipes, a screed floor still needs to be applied. This is an extra step and can involve time and costs, on top of the installation of the floor heating itself.

  3. Required demolition work: The existing floor often has to be cut out or demolished before the floor heating can be installed on wire mesh nets. This can be labor intensive and may incur additional costs for removing the old floor.

These disadvantages can impact the complexity, cost and schedule of a wire mesh nets floor heating system, especially in existing construction or renovation projects where space and budget limitations may be present.

The name 'shrink nets' is derived from their function to prevent shrinkage stress in concrete floors. The shrink net absorbs the tension that arises when the floor shrinks, preventing cracks from forming in the floor.

For optimal operation of floor heating, not only shrink nets are important, but also good insulation. Insulating foil is placed under the floor heating networks to prevent heat loss downwards. In addition, edge insulation is essential to limit energy loss at the edges of the floor. By using these insulation materials, the efficiency of the heating system is significantly improved.
